HOW WILL THE COMPLETION OF A SOCIAL WORK DEGREE CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR PLANS OF BECOMING A SOCIAL WORKER?

While I don't believe it necessary to have a social work degree to be capable of practicing- indeed I have met many people without degrees doing social work- I can't get certain places without a degree, I'll hit a ceiling. And when I state my "professional opinion" my degree and my experience will back me up.

Hi,
I am finishing up my last year at UCSB majoring in Sociology and Global/International Studies with an emphasis in Socioeconomics and Politics. I will receive BAs in both fields by June 2005. I am currently in search of an internship that will give me some experience in the international arena prior to entering a master's programme in International Relations and International Organizations. I have experience abroad. I just came back from Vietnam. If there is anyone with any useful information regarding this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Where are you getting your Masters from?? Does UCSB offer the master's degree? I know global crossroads (search google online) is an organization that will set you up with volunteer experiences abroad for any time period you are looking for, money is the only issue.

You can get a interdisciplinary emphasis Ph.D in Global Studies at UCSB. I have decided to pursue a master's abroad in Europe because I have family in Holland. For me, it would be most cost-effective to study while living there. There are several universities in Holland that offer master's programmes in the various aspects of International Affairs, including humanitarian work.
Also, thank you for the recommended website. I have browsed through it already, and find that the money is an issue and location is important as well. Unfortunate circumstances...

It is not only necessary, but required by the law in most states and countries that an individual Must have both a social work degree (usually an advanced degree) and licensure as a social worker to say they are practicing social work. Others without degrees and licenses may be helping alot of individuals but they are not legally practicing in the social work profession. While I don't believe it necessary to have a social work degree to be capable of practicing- indeed I have met many people without degrees doing social work- I can't get certain places without a degree, I'll hit a ceiling. And when I state my "professional opinion" my degree and my experience will back me up.

This is a rare treat! Finding someone from the Maryland community as I express my desire to connect with your website! I just came back from an intense trip to Palestine and want to connect what is happening there to people with regard to human rights and the strictures of the apartheid state that Israel has unfortunately become. I welcome any and all connections with folks in Palestine doing Social Work Education and Community Organization work. Thanks for your good work in designing and facilitating this infrastructure of support. Blessings. The Global Social Work Community welcomes you to our message board.
